John Boyd Dunlop riding a bicycle complete with the pneumatic tyres which he invented. The first primitive bicycle had been developed in the 1790s and had gradually been improved throughout the 19th century. In 1888 Mr Dunlop created a set of inflated rubber tyres for his son’s bicycle and patented the design which was widely adopted by cycling enthusiasts.
