This black lacquer painted box started life as a presentation box for a gift - most likely some kind of expensive food. It comes from Pingyao, an ancient walled city in Shanxi province in central China. The paintings are old and are dinstictive of that particular area. The paintings are mainly in gold, complemented with creams, blues and greens against the black background. Boxes like these in an original state are now quite rare and still make beautiful ornaments or gift boxes today.
