Painted at L'Estaque, on the southern coast of France, Landscape combines broken brushstrokes with flat, unshadowed planes of color. This method of painting was revolutionary at the time, and it propelled Derain and his colleagues Henri Matisse and Maurice Vlaminick to the forefront of the first avant-garde art movement of the twentieth century, Fauvism.

This is the first part of a two-part post on the works of André Derain (1880 – 1954), who was a French painter and co-founder of Fauvism with Henri Matisse. He was born in 1880 in Chatou, Yvelines, Île-de-France, just outside Paris.
