Standing amid the arcaded pavilions of the Topkapi Palace, looking down the wooded promontory of Sarayburnu with Asia to your right and Europe to your left, it is easy to see why Istanbul was always going to be one of the world’s greatest cities,
Did you know that Istanbul is the only city in the world built on two continents; Europe and Asia. The two parts are divided by the Bosphorus River. Yet it is not Turkey’s capital city, Ankara has that title since 1923. Most people think of it as an Asian city but actually the historic center is on the European part of town. Istanbul was also called Nova Roma, meaning New Rome because it was founded on seven hills surrounded by the city walls, just like Old Rome.
