A Dervish or Darvesh is someone treading a Sufi Muslim ascetic path or "Tariqah", who has taken vows of poverty & austerity. In this respect, Dervishes are most similar to mendicant friars in Christianity or Hindu/Buddhist/Jain sadhus. They first appeared in the 12th century; were noted for their wild or ecstatic rituals & were known as dancing, whirling, or howling dervishes according to the practice of their order. (Dervish Iran, early 20th century)

Samah. The music accompanying a sema is of exquisite beauty, beginning with the great hymn in honor of the Prophet (na't-i sharif, written by Jalaluddin himself) and ending with short, enthusiastic songs, some things sung in Turkish.
