Fransız Sokağı - French Street in Istanbul

If New York has Chinatown and Little Italy, then Istanbul has "French Street" (Fransız Sokağı). "Rue Franaise", with tented buildings, street musicians, cafés, bars and art centers, opened in summer of 2004. The street behind Galatasaray High School known as Cezayir (Algeria) Street was completely renovated from head to toe by a group lead by Mehmet Taşdiken within the scope of a two-year project. The buildings and sidewalks were improved and a special music system was established. Taşdiken…

Istanbul Cistern

There is some truly amazing architecture in Turkey - but one of the ones I really fell in love with was the Yerebatan Sarnıcı - Basilica Cistern right under the Hagia Sophia grounds. It was built to hold water for Istanbul (and there are also some really cool aqueducts too) and now that there is no need for it, it is a little tourist stop with only a small bit of water. One random thing inside was the two stone heads of Medusa (I guess she looked at herself in the mirror?) that were stolen…

Istanbul: Topkapı Palace (Harem)

Stunning tile work in the Harem. The Imperial Harem is the section of the Topkapı Palace where the most private apartments of the sultan are located. The Harem was home to the sultan's mother, the concubines and wives of the sultan, and the rest of his family, including children, their servants as well as the eunuchs guarding the harem. The Harem consists of a series of buildings and structures, connected through hallways and courtyards. Every service team and hierarchical group residing in…

Istanbul: Topkapı Palace (Circumcision Room)

Istanbul: Topkapı Palace (Circumcision Room)

In 1640 Sultan Ibrahim I added the Circumcision Room, a summer kiosk dedicated to the circumcision of young princes, which is a primary rite of passage in Islam. Its interior and exterior are decorated with a mixed collection of rare recycled tiles such as the blue tiles with flower motifs at the exterior. The most important of these are the blue and white tile panels influenced by far-eastern ceramics on the chamber facade, dated 1529. In view here is the facade to the left of the entrance…

Cobalt blue Iznik tiles - Topkapi Palace

Cobalt blue Iznik tiles - Topkapi Palace

İznik pottery, named after the town in western Anatolia where it was made, is a decorated ceramic that was produced from the last quarter of the 15th century until the end of the 17th century. The town of İznik was an established centre for the production of simple earthenware pottery with an underglaze decoration when in the last quarter of the 15th century, craftsmen in the town began to manufacture high quality pottery with a fritware body painted with cobalt blue under a colourless lead…

Istanbul: Basilica Cistern (Medusa)

The Basilica Cistern is the largest surviving Byzantine cistern in İstanbul. The cistern, located 150 m southwest of the Hagia Sophia, was built in 532 during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. This cathedral-size cistern is an underground chamber approximately 138 meters (453 feet) by 65 meters (212 feet). The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns. The cistern was constructed using columns, capitals and plinths from ruined buildings--we do not know their origins. We do not…
