The Homo heidelbergensis lived from about 700,000 yrs ago to 200,000 yrs ago. These were the first early humans to venture into the cold latitudes of Europe, were the first species to build shelters, and hunt big game animals with wooden spears. European populations of this species were the direct ancestors of the Homo neanderthalensis, NOT Homo sapiens.

Homo heidelbergensis lived around 600,000 to 250,000 years ago. They were distinctly human in physique and behaviour and evidence suggests these ancient people were accomplished tool makers and could skillfully butcher large animals.

Australopithecus Afarensis ~ I have often wondered why primates were the only species to evolve a huge brain and rise above all animals to rule the world as humans. Why wasn't it a cephalopod or a marine mammal, like a dolphin... both are very intelligent creatures?
