ALCHEMY: Cupellation is a refining process in metallurgy and alchemy, where ores or alloyed metals are treated under very high temperatures and have controlled operations to separate noble metals (gold, silver) from base metals (lead, copper, zinc, arsenic, antimony, bismuth), present in the ore. Since the Early Bronze Age, it was used to obtain silver from smelted lead ores. Fire assays in the Middles Ages and Renaissance were used for assaying minerals for their purity.
