This new NASA Hubble Space Telescope image of the Antennae galaxies is the sharpest yet of this merging pair of galaxies. During the course of the collision, billions of stars will be formed. The brightest and most compact of these star birth regions are called super star clusters.

A Black Hole Close-Up, and a Telescope as Big as the World - The Event Horizon Telescope will give astronomers an extreme close-up when our galaxy's black hole lights up.

Forms in space.
The Great Red Spot of Jupiter. Actually a storm that's been raging for over 300 years, it's three times the size of the entire Earth.
an image of the sun taken from space
On August 31, 2012 the Sun threw a major tantrum. It started with a vast arc of material towering over its surface, a stream of plasma flowing between two sunspots. Sometimes these collapse back down to the Sun’s surface, but this one exploded, blasting hundreds of millions of tons of material out into space. SDO captured this ridiculously awesome picture of the arc just before it erupted

Eying Exomoons in the Search for E.T.
While the golden age of exoplanets has barely begun, an exciting additional chapter is also taking shape: the hunt for exomoons.

Gravitational Waves: Ripples in Spacetime
Learn more about gravitational waves — the 'smoking gun' of the Big Bang, predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity in 1916.

"The Warped Side of the Universe" --LIGO's Epic Detection of Gravitational Waves (Week's Most Popular) "With this discovery, we humans are embarking on a marvelous new quest: the quest to explore the warped side of the universe—objects and phenomena that are made from warped spacetime. Colliding black holes and gravitational waves are our first beautiful examples," says Kip Thorne, Caltech's Richard P. Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics, emeritus.

Will the World's Largest Supercollider Spawn a Black Hole? (Op-Ed)
Like scenes from DC Comics' The Flash, rumors persist about particle accelerators spawning Earth-ending disasters, but there are concrete reasons why physicists in the real universe aren't losing any sleep.

Laniakea: Our home supercluster
Laniakea - Our home supercluster. The new 3D map developed by Tully and colleagues shows that the Milky Way galaxy resides in the outskirts of the Laniakea Supercluster, which is about 520 million light-years wide. The supercluster is made up of about 100,000 galaxies with a total mass about 100 million billion times that of the sun. This supercluster also includes the Virgo cluster and Norma-Hydra-Centaurus, otherwise known as the Great Attractor. | Published on 3 Sep 2014.
