Mustafa Kemal Atatürk wearing the traditional Janissary uniform from c. 1810. The large flap of the headdress was in imitation of the sleeve of Hacı Bektaş, founder of the Bektaşi dervishes, who laid his hand on early Janissaries to give his blessing. Later on, the Bektaşi Order supplied the Janissary Corps with ‘babalar’ (spiritual leaders).

A turban type helmet and sipar Turkey, late 19th c. The helmet in the style of 15th Century, blued, with pointed and twisted skull, surmounted by a square cusp, the lower part engraved by cartouches featuring inscriptions in Arabic, provided with sliding nosepiece cusped at the upper part; complete with mail neck-defence of simple closed iron rings. Circular, slightly convex sipar, at the centre a plaque in the shape of sun.
