Hanno the Navigator was a Carthaginian explorer c. 500 BC, best known for his naval exploration of the African coast. The explorer found an island heavily populated with what were described as hirsute and savage people. Several were killed & their skins preserved for transport home to Carthage. Interpreters called them gorillae, and when European explorers first encountered gorillas in the 19th century, the apes were given this name on the assumption that they were the "people" Hanno described.

The Phoenicians were a maritime trading culture that spread across the Mediterranean from 1550 BCE to 300 BCE. If they are known to have sailed to Iceland, and around Africa, then the chances are high that they also traveled to Greenland, and to North America. The Phoenician Colony of Carthage was destroyed by the Romans in 146 BCE, at the end of the third Punic War.

The Phoenicians built a trading empire around the Eastern Mediterranean. Their most famous commodity was a vibrant purple dye known as Tyrian or Phoenician purple. Prized by the Romans and later the Byzantines who used it for the robes of emperors such as Justinian, it was a luxury product and status symbol, made from the mucous of a local species of shellfish decomposed in huge vats. The dye was mentioned by Aristotle and Pliny the Elder as well as on Cuneiform tablets dating to 600-500 BC.

Antiquities
In rare images created by the Phoenicians themselves, the sarcophagus of King Ahiram was found in his city of Byblos, where it had been buried in the 13th century BC. The sides were decorated with carvings of Phoenician citizens offering homage to the king, as shown below. It will be noted that there are some similarities as well as some differences between the dress and appearance of these people compared to the merchant above.

The Phoenician alphabet. Note that ’ and ‘ were originally full consonants in the Phoenician language (glottal stop and voiced pharyngeal respectively). Several of the letters were ambiguous (i.e. denoted more than one consonant phoneme) when the Phoenician alphabet was borrowed to write Old Aramaic and Biblical Hebrew, but there is no clear evidence of this for the Phoenician language itself.
