Lovers in a Landscape  • Persian, Safavid Period, latter 16th C. Iran. Hanging from the belt is a tapered knife  or "kard" in a long sheath. Although used to pierce mail armor, it became popular for both men and women, used as a utility knife to cut fruit or other mundane items.
