Off the back of both fashion week here in Australia and the glamorous red carpet of Cannes Film Festival, I've been in a pretty blissful beauty bubble.

All in the name of work (yes, I love my job), I've spent a lot of time staring at the stunning makeup looks on the models and A-listers, but it's the hair that's having the biggest moment. Have you seen Bella Hadid's blonde transformation? Just stunning.

Right now, we're living in a golden age of hair innovation. From fancy new tools that promise salon-quality styling at home, to the rise in destination scalp care 'spas' and serums that treat your roots and locks like skincare, the tech really is taking over.

Of all the choices I've made in my life, some wild, some empowering, some controversial and even a little questionable, there's one that, at age 51, quietly haunts me.

You see, it's something us women don't talk about too often.

While we are generally comfortable speaking about matters of personal upkeep - Botox, filler, 'tweakments' - this particular upgrade is still somewhat taboo.

The midlife pursuit of beauty can feel precisely that – an endless quest full of ‘solutions’ to a situation that is simply reality: we’re ageing, things are changing, and some of them feel less than brilliant.

But, this isn’t all our grooming rituals are about. They’re also about pleasure, relaxation, what our younger allies refer to as ‘self-care’. No less an authority than Dame Joan Collins once told me that applying her morning make-up is her meditation, a creative calm in which she readies herself in ways beyond powder and paint.

I couldn’t agree more. This Bank Holiday, let us lose ourselves in the pure joy of beauty: with the best bath oils, cosseting creams and mood-boosting scents. We’re worth it, after all.

The secret to 70s star's age-defying figure as she proves she can still drop jaws at 68
It's more than 40 years since Bo Derek became an instant sex symbol after bursting onto the big screen opposite Dudley Moore in comedy classic 10. The now-famed image of the lithe actress, clad in a gold high cut swimsuit, her hair in beaded braids, running along the beach became many a teenage boy's pin-up of choice after the 1979 hit. Now aged 68, it seems the Californian beauty has lost little of her youthful lustre - looking far younger than her 68 years on Wednesday.
