Tess (1979) Great adaptation of Thomas Hardy's tragic book - Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Sumptuously directed by Roman Polanski starring the gorgeous Natasha Kinski as the tragic young heroine. Won 3 Oscars. I like Hardy's books. I just finished The Return of the Native - another story of characters caught up in circumstances they have little control of and love gone wrong - just like real life :)

Just saw this movie for the first time on the advice of a friend. There's something near-magical about these sixties flicks -- weird, LSD-like camera work and then there's Alan Bates -- sigh.
