FollowersIn 1883, the Shield Nickel was replaced by the Liberty V Nickel or "Liberty Head" nickel designed by Charles E. Barber, Engraver of the Mint. This type of nickel first appeared without the word CENTS on the reverse. To discourage fraudulent practices, the word CENTS was added on the reverse at the bottom, later that year.
