In 1900 he claimed to have discovered the Lost Word of Freemasonry, and that he was contacted by an entity, and given a text, around which he developed his philosophy of Thelema. He would go on to found his own occult society, and a religious commune, which he led from 1920 to 1923. He was denounced in the popular press as "the wickedest man in the world".
