Detail of a large embroidered headscarf, Crimean Tatar, from Turkey, 1870-1920. Called 'marama'. Embroidered on cotton (muslin), 72 x 134 cm. Featuring 6-petal, green & pink stylized flowers and purple tulips with orange pistils on a meandering, dark brown stem (flowing water motif, with angular turns). Embroidered in counted-thread technique; embroidery height (from the tip of tulips to the edge of cloth): 8 cm. (The Asiye-Zeynep Collection, Washington DC).
