Adventures in Braille: A good day

Abby has been STRUGGLING with reading Braille. She knows most of her letters but when it comes time to feel them she has been struggling a lot. She is having a hard time telling one letter from the next and when its come to feeling the letters her letter recognition was much lower then when she writes them with the Brailler. It was making her become very unexcited about Braille. I had gotten some braille flash cards with just the letters on them and I first started having her practice with…

Teaching Sighted Children about Blindness through hands-on activities is a great tool. When teaching children about different disabilities, it is more powerful when they can relate and get a feel for what it would be like to have that disability. Activity Day–Famous Women In History, Helen Keller

This year for activity day I’m teaching the 7 & 8 year old girls class. I thought it would be fun to do a study of famous women in history and tie it in with career options for women. Sounds like a plan, right? I’m sure you’ve already guessed that this month we learned about Helen Keller. I’m not sure why, but most little girls are totally enthralled with Helen’s life. We read about Helen’s childhood, her illness and the incredible accomplishments she achieved as she matured. I printed a…

The Latest from Little Owl's First Grade Nest

Hey teacher friends! March is upon us and Read Across America month is in full swing at my school. We’ve got a whole week of activities planned, including dress-up days and guest readers from the community to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Thursday. “Wacky Wednesday” made for a slightly embarrassing coffee stop at 711 on my way to work… fortunately, I live in Japan, the mecca of weird fashions… so I barely raised an eyebrow with my get-up J I was also so tired when I got to work that I…

Helen Keller Activities

We've all had those weeks where some lessons just don't go right and then we have those weeks that go better than expected and those experiences are why we are in the classroom to begin with. Last week my students and I dived into the world of Helen Keller. For those not familiar with the story, Helen Keller is a biography about a young girl who is deaf and blind. She overcomes many challenges while growing up and her story is just beautiful. This year, I really wanted my students to grasp…

Painting like Helen Keller

The kids in second grade are reading about Helen Keller this week. I help in one of their rooms in the morning, and I thought it would be really neat to do an art lesson based on doing something blindfolded. The kids thought that was one of the coolest things ever! Here are some pictures of them working on their masterpieces. I thought this would give them more respect for people with disabilities. :) When the pictures are dry, I will post them.
