From October to December every year, the Atherton-Tablelands based Tolga Bat Hospital takes in hundreds of orphaned flying fox pups. Last season we spent five weeks volunteering at the hospital. The days were incredibly rewarding but long. We made baby bat burritos from sunrise to well after sunset, which meant we didn’t have much spare time to explore the surrounding area. #nature #australia

Photo Diary
About an hour and a half from Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands is a lush, leafy region dotted with waterfalls. You could spend a whole week exploring the area, but if you only have a day or two our top picks are listed in the article.

Prey
Platypus have an electric sixth sense. When they’re looking for their next meal underwater, they shut their nose, ears and eyes and instead rely on electrical impulses given off by their prey, that they pick up with their super sensitive bill.⚡️

Rainforests
Of the thousands of native plant species in Australia, you can find half in rainforests. There are more than 200 threatened plant species in Gondwana Rainforests. Dorrigo is just one of the 40 Gondwana Rainforests reserves that are scattered from New South Wales to Queensland.

Red Tailed Tropic Bird on Lady Elliot Island If your perfect day starts by rolling out of bed, meandering 100 metres down a coral-covered beach and flopping straight into turtle-filled tropical waters, Lady Elliot Island needs to be on your bucket list. Lady Elliot Island is an ocean-lovers paradise, offering unparalleled access to the Great Barrier Reef. The island is a tiny coral cay in the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Amazon Rainforest
There are around eight different bushwalks you can do in Dorrigo National Park, and most are relatively easy. The longest is the Wonga Walk which takes about 3 hours from the Rainforest Centre. It’s a fairly easy walk on a sealed path that takes you through dense sub-tropical rainforest and past two waterfalls, Tristania Falls and Crystal Shower Falls. #Dorrigonationalpark #travelaustraliatips #nationalparksaustralia #hiking #rainforest
