Black female filmmakers

With A Dry White Season in 1989, Euzhan Palcy became the first black woman to direct a Hollywood studio film. She has been fighting the system ever since, and leading the way for a new generation of black female directors.

Released on Juneteenth, "(In)Visible Portraits" features intimate stories of Black scholars, Black girls and Black mothers.

According to filmmaker Amma Asante, Black women constitute less than one percent of the movie industry. However, this sobering statistic has not stopped the women on this list—and plenty others—from creating notable and memorable work. A salute to female filmmakers! 🎞️

The [[embed type=link nid=28870 title="October 2015 issue"]] of Sight & Sound resurrects and celebrates 100 overlooked films directed by women, and includes contributions by many filmmakers, Agnès Varda, Claire Denis and Jane Campion among them. It was born from the desire to show the diverse range of great films made by women through history, so many of which are unduly obscured and under-seen. But what about the makers of these films themselves? How visible are they?
