The Idiot, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.  I enjoyed Dostoyevsky's 1869 classic novel about the sad and noble Prince Myshkin.  Dostoyevsky's work is incredibly timeless, and Prince Myshkin was a fascinating character.  Those looking for a pat happy ending might be disappointed, but the journey is well worth taking.
