2011 CERN "Black Hole" event superimposed over a classic image of the ATLAS detector. Physics, Atom Smasher, Hadron Collider, Large Hadron Collider, Light Speed, Atom, This Weekend

We investigate possible signatures of black hole events at the LHC in the hypothesis that such objects will not evaporate completely, but leave a stable remnant. For the purpose of de fining a reference scenario, we have employed the publicly available Monte Carlo generator CHARYBDIS2, in which the remnant's behavior is mostly determined by kinematic constraints and conservation of some quantum numbers, such as the baryon charge. Our fi ndings show that electrically neutral remnants are…

19 December 2000: DELPHI detector dismantling starts as LEP makes way for its successor, the LHC. This image shows DELPHI, one of the LEP detectors, being dismantled. With the end-caps removed, the inner parts of the DELPHI detector can be seen, including millions of wires needed to control the systems on the detector as readout data from the various components. DELPHI, which ran from 1989 to 2000 on the LEP accelerator, was primarily concerned with particle identification.
