Thomas Ruff - Portraits 1981-85 This series is captivating. We can see the surface, and we can judge and compare, but we are also prompted to ask questions. Who are they? What are they like? Are they what I imagine them to be from their external appearance? How do they differ from each other? Are they happy in their lives, wherever they may be? Of course we'll never know, but the nature of photography allows us to ask and wonder, to judge and presume.
