The quadriceps femoris muscle, also known as quad muscle is located in the anterior compartment of the thigh. The function of this muscle is to extend the leg at the knee joint and to flex the thigh at the hip joint. It consists of four individual muscles; rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and vastus intermedius, which share a common quadriceps femoris tendon which inserts into the patella. DISRUPTION OF QUADRICEPS FEMORIS TENDON OR PATELLAR LIGAMENT REPAIR OF EXTENSOR MECHANISM Damage to the quadriceps mechanism generally occurs when there is active contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle against forced flexion of the knee. Most ruptures of this extensor mechanism occur in older patients. At the time of injury, the patient experiences sudden pain, which may be associated with a tearing sensation about the knee. The tendon may be weakened by age-related degenerative…

Anatomy Assignment 3-rectus femoris muscle: Function: The primary function is knee extension. It also assists with hip flexion. The rectus femoris can perform these two functions simultaneously. Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2–L4). Thus the rectus femoris received its name because it runs straight down the thigh. It is a two way acting muscle as it crosses over the hip and knee joint; therefore, it functions to extend the knee and also assists iliopsoas in hip flexion. 4-quadriceps : Function
