Peter Paul Rubens, a painter and draftsman from Antwerp, was the most important and celebrated 17-century artist from Northern Europe. His influence was particularly strong. From 1620 onwards the so-called ‘high baroque’ (maniera grande) was introduced in his work. “The Fall of the Damned” is such a highly dramatic and monumental religious painting. Albert Graefle (1807-89) - Princess Charlotte of Belgium, Empress of Mexico (1840-1927)

This painting is a copy of Winterhalter’s original portrait, painted in Paris in 1864. Graefle also copied its companion painting of the Emperor Maximilian, Princess Charlotte’s husband (RCIN 402484). Princess Charlotte (1840-1927) was the only daughter of Leopold I, King of the Belgians. She was lively and intelligent as a child and much loved by her English relations.
