19.6 Pericardium. The protective layers of the heart include the pericardial sac composed of an outer fibrous pericardium and an inner serous membrane called the parietal layer of serous pericardium. Tightly adhered to the heart is a serous membrane called the visceral layer of serous pericardium. The space between the parietal and visceral layers is called the pericardial cavity, which contains serous fluid produced by both serous membranes
