Steles are the tools used by Shadowhunters to draw runes onto their skin, weapons, and other materials. Steles look like long, slender twigs, with varying length and styles among Shadowhunters. They're also shown to be sharp, shown in Erchomai, when Clary held it to her throat in front of Lilith saying "As I live, So shall your son." Also making her throat bleed. This is a photo of Jace's stele. Stele's are used to draw the runes (sort of like protective tattoo) on shadowhunter's arms. They can be used to draw symbols for healing, speed, flight, ect. Only Clary can make her own runes to do whatever she wants. They are important tools for shadowhunters.
