Francisco de Zurbarán 1. A Cup of Water and a Rose, ca. 1630. 2. Detail from Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose, 1633. Zurbarán painted few still lifes. The the cup of water on a silver plate with a rose appears in two paintings and in ‘Still Life with Basket of Oranges’ of 1633. The silver plate is of a kind imported into Spain from Peru. The objects may be intended to be symbolic: the water refers to the Virgin’s purity; the flower recalls her title of ‘Mystic Rose’."

These paintings are my homage to the great tradition of Spanish Still Life Painting. Like the "golden age" of Dutch art, many of the greatest Spanish works were made in the 17th century, by artists such as Juan Sanchez Cotan, Pereda, Van Der Haman, and Zurburan. But I am also interested in the tradition as it moved into the next century.
