The staff and students of HBE celebrated Read Across America with a Vocabulary Parade on March 2, 2022. Our kindergarten - second-grade students, along with many teachers, chose an impressive word and created a costume that demonstrated it. They also made a sign with their word and its definition so that the parade watchers could increase their own vocabularies. What a fun way to celebrate reading!

Anyway, after A. selected his word, then came how we would design a costume representing his 'vocab word'. A good friend of mine has made several freezer paint shirts…

Each child wears a costume …

two children dressed up in costumes and holding sticks with the words limbbleextrous on them

The vocabulary parade is something started, I believe, by Ms. Hershfeld. All the teachers and students participate and everybody tries to dress up and try to portray a word. Some students have very involved costumes and others need only a hat to illustrate their chosen word. All the classes parade through the halls and then we all go out the back door of the school and parade around the block before entering the front door. It's a lot of fun and a great way to extend a vocabulary lesson and…
