A detail of a large embroidered headscarf, Crimean Tatar, probably from Romania, c. early 20th century. Called 'marama'. Embroidered on cotton (muslin), 75 x 139 cm. Featuring red & green grapes, + grape leaves on a meandering stem (flowing water motif), worked with metallic thread (silver), all in satin stitch. Height of embroidery (from the tip of silver stems to the edge of cloth): 14 cm. Note the absence of a border. (The Asiye-Zeynep Collection, Washington DC).
