Mustafa Kemal Atatürk wearing the traditional Janissary uniform from c. 1810. The large flap of the headdress was in imitation of the sleeve of Hacı Bektaş, founder of the Bektaşi dervishes, who laid his hand on early Janissaries to give his blessing. Later on, the Bektaşi Order supplied the Janissary Corps with ‘babalar’ (spiritual leaders).
