War rationing – carrots on a stick war rationing was just a  way of life during World War Two in the UK. One of the luxuries  to hit the rationing list was sugar and with no sugar, there was no ice cream.  But the official wartime substitute for ice-cream was a carrot on a stick.  Many British children born just before the war didn’t discover  what ice-cream actually was until the war was over and  the rationing stopped. Karsh would go on to photograph Eisenhower as President and in his retirement, where he delighted in showing Karsh the oil painting that he was working on of Churchill for which he used Karsh’s portrait as a source.
