c. 1530 Niklas Stoer - Turkish Nobleman on Horseback. The print run of Mercenaries and Turks is a fine example of the unprecedented growth of printing during the German Renaissance. In the first series it is 'mercenaries', German and Swiss mercenaries who traveled to various European battlefields. The second set shows of Turkish soldiers and leaders of the Ottoman Empire. The two series together, 38 sheets, were a kind of counterparts around 1530 by a number of Nuremberg artists.
