Antique Spanish Cuenca Carpet
From Cuenca, this single warp knot carpet has a tawny ground with a twisted strapwork pattern defining octogramme and quatrefoil reserves enclosing rosettes and flowing stars. The connected oval cartouche border is on the same tawny ground tone and has an internal volute and flower pattern in each panel. Accent tones include goldenrod and ivory in the narrow and fairly light, but effective, palette. The overall style is 19th century and has no reference to more classical Spanish carpets.
