Marcel "Bruno" Bigeard (1916-2010) was one of the most decorated soldiers in France; he rose from enlisted man Second Class, the lowest possible rank, in 1936 and finished his career in 1976 with the rank of LT General (Airborne).He fought in WW2, Indochina, and Algeria. He was particularly controversial for his defense of the use of torture in counter-insurgency operations in the Algerian War.
