Little Stonegate. Yorkshire England, North Yorkshire, Lancaster, Images Of England, Visit York, York England, British Travel, Northern England, York Street

Little Stonegate

York's streets that have Viking roots are 'gates' after the Viking word for street - 'gatta or gata? Not sure of the correct spelling, although they probably didn't go in for a lot of spelling in the 9th century. Stonegate is so-called as this was the route from the river to the MInster with the stones used in its construction in the 15th century. The street parallels the main Roman crossing and entrance to the Roman fortress of Eboracum from the 1st to 5th centuries.
