Archaeologists from the Istanbul Archaeological Museums work to excavate one of eight byzantine shipwrecks

Archaeologists working at a site in Turkey called Yenikapi have unearthed 37 remarkably well-preserved shipwrecks. The shipwrecks date back to the time of the Byzantine Empire, and are found in the port of the ancient city Istanbul, then called Constantinople. Eight of the shipwrecks that date to the fifth to 11th centuries are now described in a new report

Archaeologists working at a site in Turkey called Yenikapi have unearthed 37 remarkably well-preserved shipwrecks. ⛵️Y e n i k a p ı 12 The current size of Yenikapı 12 #wreck discovered at the #Marmaray #excavation zone is 7x2.3m but the vessel is orginially thought to be around 8, 8.5m long and 2.8m wide. The vessel thought to date back to the 9th century sunk together with its payload. The payload of Crimean #amphora is thought to have been full of liquid.
