This painting of Gerome is ingenious! Perfectly composed and details are in a perfect amount, the colors are exact and seen under only one light. Notice the small curls behind his ear and how the couched embroidery on his elbow and back is stretched and pulls the silk! How the tassels on the scarf winded around the tall fez dangles towards his skin. There is no vulgarity in this picture. There are no effects or painterly acrobatics. It doesn't feel staged or stiff. (Pharyah)
