Istanbul, Turkey:  The Aya Sophia was built at the direction of Emperor Justine in the 6th century and has served as both Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic Church -- and for nearly 1000 years the largest in the world, until St Peter’s basilica was built. In 1453 the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople and renamed it Istanbul and at this point Süleyman the Magnificent transformed the then church into a mosque, added the minarets and changed the name to Aya Sofia.  by MichaelLevy
