There are no known pictures of Mustafa painted during his lifetime and this small image appears as part of a later tradition of depicting the Ottoman sultans in series. Contemporary written descriptions of the sultan state that he had ‘a small but attractive face with a pale complexion and sorrowful expression, a sparse beard and large black eyes’
