Although the cigarette seems out of place in this photo it gives the young girl strength and power. She becomes the main focus. Not because she is the only one facing the camera, but because the cigarette is in her hands which catches you off guard. Green does this in his novel when giving Augustus, a cancer survivor, a cancer causing cigarette.

Born in Shanghai in 1932, Fan Ho and his family later migrated to Hong Kong, where he began to experiment with still photography. During the next twenty years he won over two hundred fifty international awards and competitions for his experimental and unconventional photographs, and at the same time established himself as a major filmmaker.
