Opened in 1954, Distelfink, located along Old Harrisburg Road, was a popular spot for locals and tourists looking for a bite to eat.

Below is Bradley Schmehl's Gettysburg print, "Lee Deliberates", showing Lee meeting with several of his subordinates on the Chambersburg Pike along West McPherson Ridge around noon on July 1st, 1863. The ca. 1880's Tipton photo on the bottom shows the same view to the west that includes the Herr Tavern and barn. I suspect that the artist may have used this image as a model for his print as even some of the trees in the photo can be matched up in the print.
