Alanya Castle was built in the 13th century, following the city's conquest in 1221 by the Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat I. Prior to the conquest, the city was known as Kalonoros. The Sultan promptly renamed it Alaiye, in honour of himself, and made it his winter capital and Mediterranean naval base.
