This bronze portrait of roman Emperor Augustus has provoked a debate about its authencity. Because it was discovered very lately and in an excellent condition, some specialists doubted it might have really been as old. But with further analysis, it turns out the technique used for the eyes is relevant of the time period, and it is now accepted that this is a portrait in honor of the Emperor by his son Crixus.

Augustus as Pontifex Maximus: head covered, wearing the toga and calcei patricii (shoes reserved for Patricians), he extends his right arm to pour a libation; a cupsa (container for officiel documents) lies at his feet. Greek marble (arms and head) and Italic marble (body), Roman artwork of the late Augustan period. Dates to between circa 90 and circa 100 AD.
