Kösem Sultan (Mâh-Peyker Sultan) 1589-1651 was one of the most powerful women in Ottoman history. She achieved power and influenced the course of the Ottoman empire through her consort Sultan Ahmet I, then through her sons Murad IV and Ibrahim I ('the Mad’) and finally through her minor grandson Mehmed IV. She was regent twice and was thereby one of two women to have been formal regents of the Ottoman Empire. It is rumored that Mehmed's mother Turhan Hatice ordered Kösem's assassination.
