Stella Artois “She is a thing of beauty” 2012 ad campaign The Belgian beer’s slogan “It’s a chalice, not a glass” draws comparisons to the (fictional) Don Draper campaign for Kodak’s new slide projector in the first season of “Mad Men”: “It’s not a wheel, it’s a carousel.” In both cases, something very basic and functional is elevated to a treasure reeking of nostalgia. A group supporting the Troy, Michigan library worked with an advertising agency to develop a provocative campaign to get a 0.7% tax increase passed. They fought anti-tax crusaders by taking surreptitiously taking over the conversation to get the tax measure voted DOWN. Instead of focusing on refuting a political argument (NO NEW TAXES) it focused the voters' attention on getting citizens thinking about what they really valued in their community. And it worked.
