Istanbul: Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia was the largest and most admired cathedral in Christianity for almost a thousand years. The current building was originally constructed between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian. The main dome collapsed during the earthquake of 558. It was rebuilt immediately, giving the building its current interior height of 55.6 meters (182 feet). The church was rededicated in 562.
