Due to the project’s location within the historic ‘Valley’ neighbourhood of Rozelle, the preservation and restoration of the late Victorian workers’ cottage was central to the design. New works are sympathetic in scale, form and architectural detail with a clear physical distinction between old and new. The two storey addition is recessive from the original cottage, consisting of two gabled roof forms, with brick and zinc facades that create a distinct material.

Designed around a Jacaranda Tree on a steep site, SP Studio thoughtfully reinterprets the 1920s Queenslander to foster a contemporary lifestyle. By carving into the hill beneath the house, two living spaces are constantly cooled by the thermal mass of the rock and earth encasing it. Although the Jacaranda House balances old and new, indoor and outdoor, the material palette remains cohesive with brick, timber and concrete. #architecture #design #dreamhouse #housegoals
