There are eight different species of sea turtles alive today. Five of them live in the Mediterranean and two of them, Caretta Caretta and Chelonia Mydas, use Turkey’s coastlines for nesting. This Chelonia Mydas was found in Mersin (south of Turkey) with a buoyancy problem and an injury on the right front fin. As soon as chelonia mydas able to resume their natural life she will be release back into the sea during the appropriate season and when the sea temperature is most suitable.
The green turtle Chelonia Mydas in Turkuazoo Sea Turtles Rehabilitation Centre is a 38 year old female. She was named after Kilikya, the place where she was found. She has buoyancy problem and a slight cut on her right flipper. The average weight of mature individuals is 230 kg, they can reach up to 425 kg. and the average carapace length is 120 cm. The one in the Turkuazoo Sea Turtles Rehabilitation Centre is 57 kg and has a 76 cm long carapace.
