Ivory trafficking is threatening the ever decreasing population of African elephants. According to the Interior Department, 8% of the remaining 470,000 African elephants are poached every year. The nature of the illegal poaching and trade of ivory is ruining their eco-systems, social structures as well as tourism in a number of African countries.

Why kill a healthy young giraffe when the current estimates by the Giraffe Conservation Fund have the population at less than 80,000 individuals across all (sub)species. This is a considerable drop in the last decade and shows that the plight of giraffe is in real danger. Efforts are underway to build up an accurate census of the entire population. With the exception of Angolan, Cape and West African giraffe, all other subspecies are either decreasing and/or unstable.

Copenhagen Zoo said it euthanized the male, named Marius, on Sunday because of a duty to avoid inbreeding. After an autopsy, "Marius" was dismembered in front of an audience that included children, then fed to the zoo's big cats. Why did they not try to find another home for him? The UK's Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which says it has a state-of-the-art giraffe house and the capacity for an extra male, was among several places which put in offers to take him.
